Finding new pathways through the immune and metabolic systems to improve health for people with severe mental illness

ImmunMIND Co-Produced Mental Health Research

Our mission

We aim to discover how the immune and metabolic systems in our bodies and brains can cause symptoms of major depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and other forms of severe mental illness. We want to know how bodily health can cause changes in mental health because that will open up new opportunities for the treatment and prevention of mental ill health.

Instead of always treating the symptoms of mental ill health with a mind-based treatment (like psychotherapy), or a brain-based treatment (like anti-psychotic drugs), we aim to find new body-based treatments - like drugs or lifestyle management changes - that target the immune or metabolic pathways in the body or brain that can lead to symptoms in the mind.
